Pablo Varando's ColdFusion Blog

Considering a new sweepstakes.... Hack Day type thing....

So I am thinking of doing something on easycfm.com that would bring out some development and creativity, but I am looking for some suggestionsand ideas from the community.

If MacGyver could use a paperclip for multiple uses... what would you define your personal tool, tag, inhouse tool, framework, anything to be to achieve the same thing? One thing to do many things with.

I'm looking for some suggestions and ideas on a good hack day that we can run to show the world that ColdFusion is not only scalable, but also re-usable. The final idea here is to develop something that we can all use to demonstrate the power of ColdFusion (and maybe with other technologies?)

Anyway, just an idea.. anu suggestions? ideas? Let me hear it... I'd love to hear your thoughts!

I am willing to give out a nice prize to the winner (cash? something electronic? your thoughts on this also)..

I just have been hearing a lot lately that ColdFusion is not as scalable or powerful as other languages (and though I know this is said a lot and has been said for years, I'd like to prove everyone wrong with a single or multiple examples that we can demonstrate the true power of ColdFusion).

So c'mon, let's hear your thoughts... don't be shy, any suggestions is better then none... so speak up!

We all love ColdFuion and would love to see it grow even more then it has in the last decade and I believe if we all pull together we can do it.... so let's hear it!

Pablo

Braden Lake's Gravatar I know it sounds somewhat plain in some respects but I would think that when most people are considering scalability they are thinking about either an eCommerce site or a web based application.

That being said, I would address/answer 3 things:

1) How scalable is ColdFusion compared to .Net, PHP, Railto and Java?
2) How quickly can a ColdFusion developer deliver on an often requested application like an eCommerce site?
3) What kind of rich user experience or "cool factor" things can ColdFusion deliver in a timely manner that other products can't?

This is something that may take some time to compare, and you may offer a challenge to the programming community to develop the same sites in these other languages to truly display the power of ColdFusion.

What I would deliver is a rich eCommerce application that would allow you to do something sweet utilizing AJAX, ORM, Image Manipulation, Database Interaction, Google Maps and CRM.

Have a website that allows people to search through product x on a website, put it in their cart while continuing to shop, create custom orders by taking the product image, allowing the user to upload an image of their choice and modify the product with an image overlay, and "ship their product". The user could look on the map to see where the closest distribution center is and get a delivery estimate. After the orders are entered and "paid" all users could go to a report that shows a listing of all customers. They can click on the customer to see an AJAX lightbox pop-up with customer information including their location on a Google map. (Warn people that their "location" would be published on this report). Show the use of AJAX biding by allowing somebody to enter a city and have the customer list dynamically change.

Pretty cool features of a system that ColdFusion can build and show the scalability that ColdFusion can offer.

Sincerely,

Braden

Ramiro70's Gravatar I am almost intrigued by this topic and would like to learn more. Could you please recommend some book to begin with? I have found many articles and periodical at http://www.pdfqueen.com pdf books and periodical search engine, but am not sure if it is all worth reading. Thank you for your advice.
